Medicare D
Medicare D is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. Sorting through the many Medicare D options (there are more than 50 plans offered in Maine) can be overwhelming. Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s staff and volunteer Medicare Advocates can help you select your best options.
Medicare D Eligibility and Enrollment
If you are 65, you are eligible for Medicare D. Consider attending a Medicare Birthday Clinic [link to sub-page Medicare Birthday Clinic] to learn more about your Medicare options. You can also compare prescription drug (Medicare D) options at www.medicare.gov. In fact, the Medicare Advocates at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging use this site to help you decide on the plan that provides the best coverage for the lowest price.
Open enrollment for Medicare D takes place every year between November 15 and December 31. You can enroll for Medicare D at www.medicare.gov or attend one of our Medicare Birthday Clinics to enroll.
Annual Review of Medicare D Plans
Our Health Insurance Specialists advise that all Medicare beneficiaries review their prescription drug plan between November 15 and December 31 each year. This is the only time of year to make changes in your drug plan.
Reasons to Review Medicare D Plans
- To get the best coverage for the lowest premium. In the last year many of the 53 drug plans offered in Maine have changed either the drugs the plan covers or the premium charged.
- Your prescribed medications may have changed.
